Years ago, I had a group I travelled with. We were followers of a great sage. Wherever we went, that sage would heal the sick and injured, while I led a group of mercenaries to fend off monsters and bandits, transport supplies... that kind of work.
We were a group of outcasts, mostly. Just a few humans, while most of our forces were beastmen, trolls, fishmen... the sorts who don't really have a place in human society.
...fishmen? I can kind of picture beastmen and trolls, but - wouldn't they have a hard time walking around on land? Or did you fend off monsters in the ocean, too?
Whoa, whoa whoa whoa, whoa. He's the one who did this to you? And he has the balls to get all butthurt about you NOT being okay with that when you found out? What the hell!
...anyway! When people do shit like that to you, it's totally natural to lose respect for them and to go your own way. I hope you haven't been beating yourself up about it!
